UEFA Cup Final
The UEFA Cup was introduced for the 1971/72 season and features clubs that have qualified for the tournament from a variety of routes. It is open to teams finishing in leading positions behind the champions in their domestic top flights, the winners of national cup competitions, the winners of the League Cup in certain countries, the eleven winners of the final matches in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, and three clubs from UEFA's Fair Play League.
Tottenham Hotspur FC were the first UEFA Cup champions in 1971/72, and English teams have gone on to win the tournament six times.
The UEFA Cup Final 2008 was held in England at the City of Manchester Stadium, Glasgow Rangers played a courageous game against Zenit St Peterburg, but zenit were the victors beating Rangers 2-0 thus securing the Russian team a place in the newly coverted Super Cup Championship.
UEFA Cup Champions Zenit St Petersburg played in Monaco against the Champions League Champions Manchester Utd and Zenit won 2-1, who will be the winners this year.
The UEFA Cup final will visit a new city this season as the competition ends at Istanbul's Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium on Wednesday 20 May 2009.
